This is a TED Talk by Reshma Saujani from 2016 that I just came across thanks to a friend at work. I love, love, love the message and it’s especially timely for me because I just dropped off my first daughter at college. That moment called for a lot of bravery from both of us.
I know, I know going off to college takes a lot more bravery than staying home and worrying about your kid — but hear me out. She’s facing so many new things all at once. It’s scary, and there’s so much potential for failure. I’m immensely proud of her for going all in. But here’s why being the parent requires a little bravery too. I have to give up control. I have to have faith in her ability to handle her own mistakes. I have to trust that she’ll find her own way. And that is crazy scary.
I love Reshma’s message about teaching bravery over perfection because being brave is something you need your whole life. The younger you are when you learn that, the better off you’ll be as you get older.
